Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is a very common dermatological condition, most often caused by a fungus, typically confirmed by a test prescribed by your doctor (scraping the nail for a sample) which will be sent to the laboratory to confirm the fungal infection and then determine the treatment with your physician.

Clearly, the fungus affects the appearance of the nails (brittle, white, or yellow) often thickened and detached from the skin. However, more than half of the nail anomalies are not nail fungus. Therefore, its diagnosis requires the opinion of a specialized professional. Nail fungus must be treated effectively before it reaches the nail matrix (nail bed).

  • I encourage my patients to be regular with nail trimming (clean cuts) to reduce thick nails. *Prevent foot maceration: wear open-toed shoes in summer, prefer cotton socks (ideally made of Scottish thread to limit sweating) and change them every day.

  • Wash your feet once a day and dry the spaces between your toes thoroughly. Following up with your podiatric nurse can assist you in your treatment process and save you from recurring situations.
